About Your Selection

Natural History Museum, Vienna. 30,000 B.C.

Discovered in 1908, this prehistoric goddess statue was dubbed Venus of Willendorf. The original was quite small, easily fitting in the palm of a hand. It's one of the oldest prehistoric statues ever discovered. This reproduction which sits on a black marble base perfectly captures the slightly reddish color of the original artifact. It's a great gift for goddess collectors, fans of prehistoric art or those who like to collect distinctive sculptures.

About Venus of Willendorf

The statue Venus of Willendorf was found by the researcher Szombathy in 1908. A small statue made from limestone with red pigments, the representation is one of the more "full figured" interpretations of the Paleolithic figures. Venus of Willendorf symbolizes the Earth and its fertility and the continuity of life. She is the Mother Goddess, the universal feminine aspect at its most early and primitive. As sustainers of life, the woman was revered for her ability to bear a child and seen as priestess and nurturer. More than 90% of all images found in the Paleolithic period were of women.
