Asclepios was the Greek god of medicine and healing (called Aesculapius in Rome). Greek legend claims him to be the son of Apollo and the nymph Coronis. Historians suspect he was actually a mortal who practiced his healing arts near Trikkala on the Thessalian plain of central Greece. His fame as a healer likely caused him to be viewed as a god. He’s most famous sanctuary was located in Epidaurus.

The temples of Asclepios contain sacred springs with the healing powers of the Earth. Asclepius is most often portrayed with a physician's staff with an Asclepian snake wrapped around it; distinguishing him as a healer and an enduring image that is still viewed as a symbol of modern medicine today. He is depicted as a older man with thick wavy hair and a full beard.
