Ancient Greek Statue Artemis the Huntress with Stag

This elegant bonded stone ancient Greek statue (11.5" tall) depicts Artemis the Greek goddess of hunting and archery, based on a work from The Louvre Museum in Paris (4th Century B.C.). The original was discovered in Tivoli at a villa once owned by Emperor Hadrian.

Artemis, also known by her Roman name Diana, was the Greek goddess of hunting and archery. She is primarily portrayed as a huntress armed with a bow and quiver surrounded by dogs and a stag. Artemis was worshipped as the goddess of chastity and protector of youth and maidens. She is the virgin goddess, who never knew marriage or love. Ancient Greeks would pray to the goddess for guidance during the transition from adolesence into adulthood. This Artemis statues tells of the great joy she experienced running through the forest hunting with her golden bow, dogs and deer in tow. Artemis came to be seen as the moon goddess, just as her twin brother Apollo was seen as the sun god.
